What does it mean widely spaced teeth?

The scientific terms that describe gapped teeth or teeth gaps are diastema and trema .
Diastema is the space between the central incisors, while the spaces between the other teeth are trema. Usually patients don’t use these terms at all. They just call the dentist, evoking this problem by expressions such as: widely spaced teeth, space between teeth, dental spaces, gaps between teeth or I want aligned teeth, side by side, lined up. In this article we will refer to any dental spaces that aesthetically bother you.

Why do the spaces between the teeth appear?

The gaps between teeth can hinder the smooth functioning of the chewing process, especially when they are acquired and not hereditary. Before closing the gaps between teeth you need to know the factors that led to their appearance:

• Hereditary factor (native)
• Malocclusion (uneven contact surfaces overload certain groups of teeth and consequently the spaces appear)
• Some categories of dental abnormalities (when the teeth, usually the first premolar or lateral incisors have not erupted on the dental arch)
• Tooth migration after extraction
• Bad habits (when the tongue pushes your teeth forward with constant pressure)
• Pathology such as periodontitis or osteoporosis (bone loss leads to improper dental alignment)

Solutions: How to close the teeth gaps?

There are two techniques to solve this problem:

• The orthodontic braces (the most correct and healthy solution to close the gaps, because it doesn’t require the preparation of the teeth (teeth filing)
• Ceramic veneers or crowns (this solves the problem of teeth gaps, and at the same time other unsightly aspects such as shape, size, color, etc.)

Choosing the right solution for “gapped teeth” is directly related to the appearance of that spaces. Each case with wide spacing necessarily requires an individual approach, because the solutions presented above have special indications and recommendations, sometimes even contraindications.
